Lewis, 85, issued a statement through the association, calling for "the time for a new era Telethon".
"I welcomed the annual Telethon since 1966 as a labour of love, and I will make my last appearance on the show this year in interpreting my signature song, you'll Never Walk Alone," Lewis said of a primetime shortened six broadcast hours scheduled for September 4.
Lewis, a resident of Las Vegas, has struggled in recent years against a disease debilitating back, cardiac and pulmonary fibrosis of chilling pulmonary disease. He said that he will continue to serve as President of the Muscular Dystrophy Association national, as it is since the beginning of the 1950s.
"I'll never desert MDA and my children," he said.
Officials with the base of Tucson, Arizona non-profit hailed Lewis as one of philanthropists great of the world.
