Songwriter Brooks apparently kills in New York

 Joseph Brooks, composer Academy Award-winning "You Light Up My Life" awaiting trial on charges of sexual assault on over a dozen women, was found dead Sunday in an apparent suicide in his apartment in Manhattan said police.

Brooks, 73, was discovered in his apartment in the Upper East Side about 12: 30 a.m. by a friend with whom he had planned to lunch, said police spokesman Paul Browne. It was not immediately clear how long the body had been there. The door of the apartment was ajar, said police.


Death of Brooks comes five months after his son was arrested in an unrelated case, high - profile. The son is accused of the murder of his girlfriend, whose body was found in December in a tub overflow in a hotel after in SoHo.


The elder Brooks was discovered on the sofa in the lounge with a dry cleaning plastic bag around his head and a towel coiled around his neck, said Browne. A hose attached to a helium tank was connected to the bag, he said.


The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Police said a suicide note was found, but they reveal its contents.

The helium is difficult to detect in autopsies. The use of killing oneself is described in a manual of suicide more sold by British author Derek Humphry.


Brooks was awaiting trial on allegations that he molested women who were lured to his apartment for the hearings of the supposed acting. He pleaded not guilty.


Counsel and counsel for Manhattan Brooks made no immediate comment on the death of Brooks.


Brooks won the Oscar for best original song for the Ballad of Debby Boone 1977 "you Light up my life" and directed a film of the same name. He is an actor who has a one - night stand with a Director. Brooks also won a Grammy Award for the song.


He pleaded not guilty in 2009 for rape, sexual abuse and other charges in the attacks on 13 women. His trial date has not been set.
