The film tells the highly publicized case of student culinary Paco Larranaga, who was arrested in 1997 for the abduction, rape and murder of two sisters as a young man of 19 years. He was convicted despite dozens of witnesses to be a guarantor of his comings and goings on another Philippine island hundreds of kilometres away.
Michael Collins film had been earlier that a special mention in the festival took the jury of the prize.
Festival Executive Director Nancy Schafer said she hopes the film "will help raise the fate of Paco and his freedom.".
