Kronos Quartet, Patti Smith awarded Swedish award (AP)

STOCKHOLM - American Quartet Kronos Quartet and rocker Patti Smith won the Polar Music 2011 Prize, the Prize Committee announced Tuesday.

The musicians will be invited to Stockholm to accept the price of 1 million kroner ($ 166,000) later this year.

The Polar Music Prize more prestigious music from Sweden and is usually shared by a pop artist and a classical musician. It was founded by Stig Anderson, manager of the Swedish group ABBA, in 1989.

The Prize Committee said that "by devoting his life to art in all its forms, Patti Smith demonstrated how rock ' do roll it in poetry and how poetry is in the rock ' does roll.".

The Smith born in Chicago, 64, "has changed the way that examines a generation, the esteem and dreams," said the Committee.

The Kronos Quartet, which is based in San Francisco, has been praised for incorporating avant-garde rock and music from a variety of sources around the world.

"Since almost 40 years that the Kronos Quartet has been revolutionizing the potential of the Quartet genre when it comes to style and content,"the Committee said.""

Polar Music Prize last year was shared by the composer Italian Ennio Morricone and Icelandic singer Bjork.
