CANNES, France - Pedro Almodovar has helped launch the international careers of several Spanish players who are now legends of Hollywood, Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. Now the famous filmmaker says that he is toying with the idea of making his first film in English.
The Academy Award-winning Spanish is always remained deeply attached to his native land, and none of his 18 films has been set beyond its borders.
That could change if is one of the three term development projects.
"There is a script... which could potentially become my first project in English," Almodovar said in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was promoting his latest film, horror film "the skin I live In". "."
"I write in Spanish, but I spoke to an American writer of doing the English version.".
Almodovar has refused to provide details on the project, which, he said, is in the early stages of development.
"The skin I live In" - one of the 20 films in competition for the first prize of Palme d'Or at the Cannes Festival - marks the return of a Hollywood heartthrob who was a regular feature of Almodovar films since the 1980s, Antonio Banderas. The two have not worked together since the 1990s "Tie Me Up!" Tie me! ?
In The Skin,"actor of Banderas broke out the mould Latin Lover of his Hollywood work, playing a glossy plastic surgeon and calculation bent on revenge for the rape of his daughter. Pared-down performance of Banderas is among its most highlights of recent memory.
Almodovar "wanted this character is always under control, never to reveal the monster there inside," said Banderas. "This character with Pedro really open the door with me to a different grass."
"I'll be 51 this year and now I get the opportunity to make the characters, I've never done before," said Banderas.
Almodovar think partner of Banderas, Elena Anaya, could follow in the footsteps of Almodovar muse, Penelope Cruz. In The Skin,"Anaya provides a zinger of a performance as a victim of Machiavellian conspiracy of the character of Banderas.
"In addition to his youth and the fact that it is a beautiful girl, Elena is not afraid of any type of scene," said Almodovar.
"I think that it is the most open actress in this way I have ever met." It can be in physical situations that are truly atrocious, "as the film brutal rape scene and not blinking, he said."
"It has the hardness required to manage truly difficult scenes and the sensitivity to be able to convey emotion in a really direct and immediate manner," said the filmmaker. "I don't like making comparisons, but I predict a future like that of Penelope in the United States for Elena."
Anaya has already had an overview of the experience of work in Hollywood, with its role as a vampire in the action flick 2004 "Van helsing." If she said that she had "lots of fun" on the project, Anaya said that it is not angling for roles in big budget blockbusters.
Still, the doe-eyed 35 years said that it is not excluding anything.
"You never know what kind of life opportunities holds in store," she said. "It goes without saying that I am super happy and incredibly happy with the possibility of Pedro gave me here.".
