Christopher Meloni does not return to "Law & Order: special NBC unit" when it returns this fall.
The actor and Universal Media Studios have been unable to put an end to a new contract, according to a person familiar with the situation, who spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because NBC and the studio had not allowed for public comment.
Partner of the Meloni, Mariska Hargitay, will return for the upcoming season, the 13th show, said of the person.
Meloni portrayed Detective Elliot Stabler, a father and veteran of an elite squad which investigates crimes with a sexual aspect.
